After highlighting the journeys of Hayden Bird and Reece Williams, last but certainly not least in our National Apprenticeship Week celebration is Daniel Davies.

Daniel has successfully completed his apprenticeship and is now a fully qualified Vehicle Panel Technician at Individual Specialist Cars. His journey demonstrates the value of hands-on training, perseverance, and the importance of structural vehicle repairs in the accident repair industry.

The Role of a Vehicle Panel Beater Technician

A Vehicle Panel Beater (Panel Technician) is responsible for restoring and repairing a car’s bodywork after an accident. This highly skilled role involves:

✔️ Assessing vehicle damage and determining the best repair method
✔️ Removing, repairing, and replacing damaged panels to manufacturer standards
✔️ Working with aluminium and carbon fibre materials
✔️ Using specialist tools for dent removal, welding, and realigning chassis structures

What inspired you to pursue a career as a Panel Technician?
"I enjoy problem-solving, and panel repair feels like a challenge I can take on and fix. Every job is different, which keeps it interesting."

Why did you choose to complete your apprenticeship at Individual Specialist Cars?
"The business has a lot of equipment and a variety of jobs, which gave me the chance to learn different techniques and work on all kinds of repairs."

How did you balance the study and practical work aspects of your apprenticeship?
"I made sure to do most of my studying in my free time so I could focus on learning hands-on skills while at work."

What was the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship experience?
"Gaining experience and learning new skills from my mentors. Working with a great team made a big difference."

Were there any challenges you faced during your training, and how did you overcome them?
"One of the biggest challenges for me was filler repairs. At first, I found them difficult, but after lots of practice and advice from my mentors, I improved and became much more confident."

Can you describe a moment or project during your apprenticeship that you're particularly proud of?
"One of my biggest achievements was doing a quarter panel change on my own. At first, I didn’t feel ready for it, but with encouragement and support from my mentors, I completed the job, and it turned out great."

How has qualifying as a Panel Technician changed your perspective on the automotive industry?
"It hasn’t changed much—I still really enjoy it, and I’m learning something new every day."

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in the panel department?
"Listen, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to try something new. Take on challenges and learn from them."

What skills do you think are most important for a Panel Technician to have?
"Patience is the most important skill. You won’t always get it right the first time, and rushing can make things worse."

Would you recommend this career path to others, and why?
"Yes, definitely! If you enjoy problem-solving, taking on challenges, and have a passion for the motor industry, this is a great career to go into."

What does an M.E.T. Technician do?

M.E.T. (Mechanical, Electrical, and Trim) Technicians specialise in diagnosing, stripping, and rebuilding vehicles after accidents. With modern cars featuring Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), hybrid technology, and complex electrical systems, M.E.T. Apprenticeships provide critical training for future technicians.

These Apprenticeships provide a valuable route into the UK automotive repair industry; with hard work, dedication and commitment, allowing aspiring technicians to develop hands-on skills, gain industry-recognised qualifications, and build successful careers. What inspired you to pursue a career as a Vehicle M.E.T. Technician?

"I always loved cars, but wanted a different route from being a mechanic so went into being an M.E.T technician."

Why did you choose to complete your apprenticeship at Individual Specialist Cars?

"The calibre of cars here is so high, being able to walk into work with some of the rarest and special cars is something anyone into cars wants. The quality of work is something I wanted to be able to achieve."

How did you balance the study and practical work aspects of your apprenticeship?

"That is the best part of an apprenticeship, being able to learn from college but also while being able to do the job physically. It’s great to be able to practice things learnt from college in work."

What has been the most rewarding part of your Apprenticeship experience?

"Being able to take skills home and use them to help others, with small problems with a car or just helping to advise them with what to do."

Were there any challenges you faced during your training and how did you overcome them?

"The biggest challenges were the assessments for me and being able to pass them was a big hurdle. So I had to revise the theory and practice the practical things at work but they took the most effort to get through them."

Can you describe a project or moment during your apprenticeship that you’ re particularly proud of?

"One project that I am proud of was a Tesla that had to have the entire front-end stripping to nothing and being able to put that back together in the time I did and seeing it drive out the workshop was a good moment."

How has qualifying as a Vehicle M.E.T Technician changed your perspective on the automotive industry?

"It's made me see how hard working in the automotive industry is and how many different aspects of the automotive industry there are."

What advise would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship within the M.E.T. department?

"Work hard but take your time with learning what is needed and the process of stripping and refitting will come to you in time."

What skills do you think are most important for a Vehicle M.E.T. Technician to have?

"Being able to see things from a different angle and being able to problem solve. These help when trying to figure out how things come apart and go back together."

Would you recommend this career path to others, and why?

"Yes I would because it’s a great way to learn how cars work and gain the skills necessary to see finer details when it comes to a cars finish."

What inspired you to pursue a career as a Vehicle Paint Technician?

"I decided to do this as my Uncle is a painter and I learnt the the passion for wanting to paint cars from him."

Why did you choose to complete your apprenticeship at individual specialist cars?

"I decided to choose Individual Specialist Cars because I saw that Individual was a very high standard place and I thought I would learn a lot from the place."

How did you balance the study and practical work aspects of your apprenticeship?

"I balanced it quite well as I went to college for one day a week and work for 4 days so I learnt the practical side from work and theory from college."

What was the most rewarding part of your apprenticeship experience?

"The most rewarding part of it was meeting a great team at Individual also learning different skills from different people from here."

Were there any challenges you faced during your training and how did you overcome them?

"I faced different challenges along the way from jobs going wrong which is part of the journey but I ask questions and learn different skills to avoid issues."

Can you describe a project or a moment during your apprenticeship that you're particularly proud of?

"I am proud to have got the e-mail saying I passed my apprenticeship and appreciate all the people at Individual Specialist Cars for helping me get there."

How has qualifying as a vehicle paint technician changed your perspective on the industry?

"Being qualified has now given me more confidence within the organisation the job and to be able to progress further in the organisation."

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in vehicle paintwork?

"I would advise that people learn and listen to everything that people are trying to show them as it is a hard skill to learn."

What skills do you think are most important for a vehicle paint technician to have?

"I would say being able to communicate well have understanding within what you're doing also have patience."

Would you recommend this career path to others and why?

"I would recommend this career path as it is a good trade to learn and the job gives you satisfaction when you have completed a good job."

What to do After a Road Traffic Accident – A Driver’s Guide

Sant’Agata Bolognese/Imola, 17 April 2024 – Lamborghini Iron Lynx will race its SC63 prototype on home soil for the very first time this weekend as the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship returns for the second round of the season at Imola.

The Imola weekend marks a full circle of sorts for the Lamborghini Iron Lynx team, as the venue played host to the first official test session for the 3.8-litre V8 twin-turbo LMDh machine in August last year. And, following two successful race events so far this year, at the FIA WEC season-opener in Qatar and the Sebring 12 Hours, the team is ready to continue its discovery of both the championship and the Hypercar category.

Competing at home in Italy, just over an hour’s drive from the Sant’Agata Bolognese headquarters of Automobili Lamborghini, will be a big honour for the Iron Lynx team and its Factory Driver roster of Mirko Bortolotti, Edoardo Mortara and Daniil Kvyat, who will once again be at the wheel of the #63 car.

The LMGT3 line-up also remains unchanged, with Claudio Schiavoni, Franck Perera and Matteo Cressoni aiming to build on their sixth-place finish in Qatar in the #60, while the all-female #85 Iron Dames crew of Michelle Gatting, Sarah Bovy and Doriane Pin arrive in Italy with the podium in their sights.

Lamborghini Iron Lynx heads into the second race – of eight – off the back of a promising seventh-place finish in the Sebring 12 Hours in America last month. Overall pace of the car was stronger than expected and the mechanical longevity and reliability of the #63 proved surprisingly strong, given the fierce demands of the Sebring circuit. Indeed, Lamborghini Squadra Corse engineers considered the 12 Hours as the most challenging race conditions the SC63 is likely to face all year. Reliability and reaching the finish of the 6 Hours of Imola, therefore, remains the priority this weekend, with the team using the knowledge and lessons from Qatar in particular to develop the baseline setup during the three free practice sessions.

The Imola circuit, which a 20-turn, 4.909km track, presents many challenges for competitors with overtaking opportunities few and far between. Traffic is also likely to play a crucial role in the outcome of the race, with a lack of heavy braking zones and narrow sections.

Ferrari opens new Official Ferrari Body repairer: Individual Specialist Cars in Solihull

London, 07 June 2023 – Ferrari North Europe is delighted to announce the opening of a brand new, Official Body Repairer, with Individual Specialist Cars in Solihull. The new Body Repairer workshop covers 2,300 sq m and has dedicated facilities to ensure the highest quality repairs, alongside a customer lounge that meets the latest Ferrari Corporate Identity. This brings the customer experience in-line with that offered by the rest of the Ferrari Official Dealer network.

The Individual Specialist Cars workshop has a Vehicle Inspection Area with a dedicated ramp and viewing area for client consultation both pre- and post-repair, as well as 4x 2-post scissor lifts, a 4-wheel alignment ramp, an MOT bay, and a Brake Testing facility – all of which is designed to ensure the client’s vehicle is repaired to the highest possible standard. In addition, the new workshop has 2x dedicated panel repair bays, one of which featurs a chassis alignment jig and ramp for major structural repairs to ensure the vehicle is repaired to original factory standard and maintains the factory warranty. It also has its own dedicated paint mixing room, and 2x paint booths with high and low level lighting and a scissor lift to ensure paint technicians can repaint every car to a factory standard.

In addition to the dedicated Ferrari Body Repairer facilities, one of the key elements which makes Individual Specialist Cars unique are the two owners: brothers Amer and Zee Mirza. The Mirza brothers have been in the Body Repairer business for nearly 20 years, but have also been Ferrari clients for nearly 15 years. They are also both fully certified Ferrari Structural Technicians and have completed the highest level of training courses offered by Ferrari for repairing and welding aluminium structures. This means that the Mirza brothers truly have a unique insight into not only the Ferrari customer experience and expectations, but also the factory’s requirements and standards for vehicle repair.

The opening of Individual Specialist Cars in Solihull has also created 14 new roles in the local community, with a target of expanding the headcount to 20 by 2024 in order to cover all facilities and meet the expected demand from clients and the Ferrari Dealer Network.

The Ferrari that crossed the Maranello gates in 1947 was more than a new car, it was a declaration of intent, and the beginning of a 75-year culture of excellence built on craftsmanship, dedication, tradition and innovation. It is a culture that has created a stream of automotive masterpieces, each destined to transcend time.

Exactly 75 years to the day, Ferrari is celebrating its anniversary at the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena by opening the doors to Ferrari Classiche – a unique department that the public usually never sees. Set up in 2006, it offers owners an exclusive service designed to protect the priceless heritage that classic Ferraris represent.

"Ferrari Forever" presents the work this department carries out and the services it offers – like the Certification of Authenticity, reserved for all Ferrari road cars, sports cars and prototypes over 20 years old. This allows owners to obtain an official document certifying the full authenticity of their cars.

The exhibition takes visitors through the fascinating maintenance and restoration carried out in Ferrari Classiche’s workshop – processes that bring cars of all ages back to their original splendour. This work relies on access to the foundry and machine tools that produced the original parts. None of this would be possible without the expertise of highly specialised technicians, who have in-depth knowledge of the secrets of Ferrari engines and the unique features of each model.

There is a particular focus on the Historical Archive, a perfectly preserved collection of the assembly sheets of every Ferrari produced since 1947. Access to the Archive ensures that all Ferrari Classiche’s work conforms exactly to the original designs.

The story of Ferrari Classiche's work is complemented by 15 officially certified cars on display, including some restored by the Department itself.

The essence of Ferrari's history can be found in these vehicles, which embody the marque’s sporting soul. There are unique Gran Turismo models like the 1956 250 GT Competizione Tour de France, by designer and coachbuilder Sergio Scaglietti. The bodywork of some of Ferrari’s most alluring and victorious sports cars was shaped by master craftsmen at the Carrozzeria Scaglietti atelier. The 250 GT’s trophy cabinet is one of the most extensive in sports car history, having won a record number of victories in its GT Class.

Another example of rare beauty in the exhibition is the 1959 250 GT Cabriolet, built in limited numbers by Pinin Farina. Aimed at sophisticated clients who loved to frequent glamorous destinations on the Côte d'Azur and California, this elegant, open-topped Ferrari Gran Turismo offered balanced lines and a comfortable drive. It was seen at the world’s most exclusive events and played a starring role on the big screen in Hollywood films, and in the daily lives of leading actors and international jet-setters like Barbara Hutton.

In addition to the classic cars on display, visitors will also have the opportunity to admire unique artefacts such as an original “mascherone” from the 1953 Ferrari 500 Mondial. At the time, to make cars in line with the designer’s vision, coachbuilders would create a reference template to determine the vehicle’s final silhouette. The metal sheets used – mainly aluminium at Ferrari – were shaped by hand, and “sewn” together. This beautiful piece of automotive art is testament to the extraordinary level of craftsmanship that flourished at Ferrari between the 1940s and the 1960s.

To mark its 75th anniversary, “Ferrari Forever” tells the story of a tradition of excellence that transcends time – one that will continue to innovate and evolve into the future. It will also serve as a reminder that every Ferrari has the innate potential to become a future classic.

Following the announcement from the Prime Minister to tackle COVID-19, our main priority is the safety of our Staff, their families and loved ones and do not believe it right to ask our Team Members to travel into work.

It is very important for us as a Business to follow the advice given during these unprecedented times, therefore ensuring the well being of our Team and Customers.

In response to this announcement, Individual Specialist Cars have taken the difficult but socially responsible decision to temporarily close the business. This shutdown will be in effect until further notice, or until any further Government notification of lock down being lifted.

So, on Saturday 8th June 2019, TeamIndividual put on their glad rags and dancing shoes to attend to the Audi Ball 2019, hosted by Jardine Audi , to raise funds for 3 amazing charities; Whizz Kidz, Legacy4Lucyand Promise Dreams.

What a great night we all had, together with the other sponsors; McCann, Three Pines Builders and Guests, we all raised a stupendous amount of £13,513.00. Wow!

The fantastic £13,513.00 was raised via ticket sales and boosted by further entertainment on the night including an auction, silent auction and raffle. The funds will go towards helping transform the lives of children with disabilities across the UK via the work of Whizz, helping to find a cure for breast cancer via Legacy4Lucy and helping to make the dreams of terminally-ill children come true through Promise Dreams.

Paul Bonner, will be leading the Team as General Manager to take Individual Specialist Cars to the next level of progression and development in order to provide our clients with continued customer service.

Paul brings with him many years of experience within the Automotive Industry, working with Multi-Brands at Vertu Group, Smart Repair Operations in London and BMW. In his previous role as Bodyshop Manager with Vertu Group, Paul was awarded ‘Bodyshop Manager of the Year’, and we are delighted to say that he shares the same passion as we do “finding, recruiting and retaining great people and working with them to create the best possible team”, Paul also states “with a wealth of knowledge and experience in Bodyshop Management, my aim is to deliver results from drive, honesty, trust and a teamwork ethic”.

Please welcome, Max Ali, who joins us as Vehicle Damage Assessor. Max brings with him 25 years of experience working within the Vehicle Accident Repair and Motor Insurance industry, having worked and trained with prestigious automotive franchises and major insurance companies.

Hello and Welcome to Individual Specialist Cars first ever Blog and we are looking forward to sharing some interesting articles, news and any other information you would like us to discuss.

As you know we were recently appointed Approved Repairers for the Volkswagen UK, Volkswagen Group Paint & Body Network and we were given the opportunity to share our story with them which has recently been published by Volkswagen UK. We are very proud to share this article with you and would like to thank Volkswagen UK for allowing us to tell our story:

The secret to ISC’s success is great service, and it’s immediately apparent that Amer and Zee were born to give customers exactly that. In 1935, the brother’s great grandparents started selling Austins, Morrises and Buicks to the Maharajas of India. After India gained independence in 1947, the family moved to Pakistan and opened the first Peugeot dealer in the country in 1955, followed by a ŠKODA dealership. Even in the days before Every Body Counts, the family took great pride in making customers happy to guarantee repeat business. In 2013, it’s obvious that the grandparents’ spirit lives on in Amer and Zee.

“People walk through the doorway of bodyshops expecting to be exploited or taken for a mug,” explains Amer. “But we treat everyone that walks through our door as a person, a friend and a customer for life. The first thing we tell our employees is that their job is to make friends with our customers. Every customer has mine and Zee’s mobile numbers, and we tell them they can call us any hour of the day or night to talk about their repair. And they do!”

“If a customer walks in to our reception ,” continues Amer, “I ’ll get out of my office and make them a coffee. If we make them feel like a customer, we’ve failed. We want them to feel like our friends, to be our friends. We want that person to tell the other 100 people they know about the service they had here."

“If a customer can’t afford to have a repair done and their car isn’t too battered I’ll say ‘It’s still drivable. Save your money and have the repair done in a few months when you can afford it. I don’t want your money, I want you to be happy.’ I understand that people have other things to think about than their cars. That makes the difference. A salesman would be shaking his head in disbelief at some of the things we do to keep our reputation, but in the end we just want to make our customers happy.”

Six months ago, ISC added the Volkswagen Group Paint and Body approval to its Porsche authorisation, and they’ve made a name for themselves repairing other high-end cars such as Bentleys and Lamborghinis. They use this to their advantage when dealing with all their customers.

“I want a customer to bring his Golf in for repair and know he’s being treated exactly the same as a customer with an Audi, Bentley or Rolls Royce ,” says Amer. “ There’s no difference; we want them all to be happy with the work we do.”

ISC didn’t spring up in the centre of Birmingham overnight.

Amer and Zee picked up the family tradition for satisfying customers when they started apprenticeships at BMW.

Amer pauses on our tour of the crowded and crop-free workshop to remember when he and Zee went it alone: “We left BMW after 18 years and with £400 we bought a van. We started a company called Individual Interior Design, and we painted fixtures and fittings in houses as if they were car parts; we even used Glasurit paints and primers. We’d paint radiators with pearlescent paint that changed colour in the sun, or spray ordinary white kitchen cupboard doors metallic black. It was a glimpse of our future; we were selling workshop hours!

“It was tough at the start. My wife said she’d give us six months to make the business work. Zee moved back in with mum and dad and we didn’t even have change to buy fags.”

In 2006 the brothers saved up enough money to pay for three months’ rent on their first workshop. Their infectious charisma and work ethic meant they had enough car repair work lined up to call time on the interior decorating business and focus on fixing cars.

With the bodyshop up and running, and the customer base growing rapidly, the pair’s belief in doing the best quality job and giving the best service possible became tougher. They’ve made several hard decisions and leaped plenty of hurdles to keep their reputation intact.

“We’ve always been bombarded with work,” says Zee. “The quality controller does his final inspection of each car in the workshop because that’s where the best light is. I’d prefer he does it in the valet bay, but I want him to be happy that he can give customers the best final result. Things will never be perfect, but you’ve got to do the best with what you’ve got.”

Zee and Amer’s ambition to make ISC the best bodyshop in the country seems unquenchable. To them, one thing is clear: being the best at what you do needs the support of your customers.

“We lose a lot of money by redoing jobs but it’s the only way to ensure the quality is as good as possible,” says Amer. “However, in seven years we’ve never had a customer annoyed with the work we’ve done on his or her car.”

Seven years with no complaints and brothers’ dedication and ambition.
